Promoting the application of heat pump systems in China
The China Heat Pump Forum and the sub-forum on Sino-German Heat Pump System Application Technology
The China Heat Pump Forum organized by the China Heat Pump Alliance (CHPA) took place from July 31 to August 2 in Nanjing. As an annual featured big event on heat pump, it aimed at exchanging and exploring the new prospects for the development of the heat pump industry in China. About 1,500 representatives from the government, industry associations, domestic and foreign heat pump enterprises and scientific research institutes participated in this annual industry meeting. GIZ under the framework of the Sino-German Energy Partnership played an active role sharing German heat pump developments.
Ms. Yin Yuxia, Project Director of the Sino-German Energy Partnership of GIZ, delivered a keynote speech outlining the potential of large-scale high-temperature heat pumps in Germany in decarbonizing the industry sector and promoting centralized heating. She also shared successful cases, strategies, and best-practices from Germany´s heat pump development.
During the event, CHPA released the White Paper on the Decarbonization Potential of Industrial Heat Pumps. The paper analyzes the important role of high-temperature heat pumps in decarbonizing the industrial sector, compiling both domestic and international application cases. Furthermore, the paper presents relevant policy recommendations to promote the development of industrial heat pumps. The Sino-German Energy Partnership supported the draft of the white paper with contributions from German private sector.
As both China and Germany face similar challenges in heat pump development, such as the insufficient installation capacity, GIZ and CHPA co-organized the sub-forum on Sino-German Heat Pump System Application Technology. The subforum provided an exchange platform for representatives from associations, heat pump companies and training institutions to discuss the challenges and solutions in heat pump system installation. With its extensive experience, Germany can provide valuable reference to promote the application of heat pump systems in China, including the concept of system efficiency and the regulated standardized training program for heat pump installations.
Invited by GIZ, more German and international experts brought their knowledge and insights to the discussion. Mr. Dr. Martin Sabel, General Manager of the German Heat Pump Association (BWP) shared the heat pump industry development in Germany. Mr. Anders Hove, Senior Researcher at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies (OIES) talked about the new opportunities for heat pump industry accompanied by China's Whole-County Photovoltaic Policy. This covers key take-aways from the research he previously led under the framework of the Sino-German Energy Transition project, the component of Sino-German Energy Partnership focusing on think tank cooperation and policy researches.
For next step, the Sino-German Energy Partnership will update the previous policy recommendation paper High temperature heat pumps in Germany and Europe – potentials, application cases and support policy, and work with heat pump associations and enterprises in China and Germany to develop specifications for the installation of heat pump systems and develop training materials for installation. The project will continue to promote the application of heat pump systems in China and contribute the low-carbon transformation in heating sector.

About the Sino-German Energy Parntership
Sino-German Energy Partnership is the central dialogue platform on energy and energy efficiecny between the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) and the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the National Energy Administration (NEA) of the People’s Republic of China. The main objective of the partnership is to foster and advance the far-reaching and profound energy transitions ongoing in both countries by exchanging views, best practices and knowledge on the development of a sustainable energy system, primarily centered on improving energy efficiency and expanding the use of renewable energy. The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH implements the project under commission of BMWK.
